Moving
Forward from Alexandria
By Poonam Ahluwalia, YES
Executive Director
And
so, a remarkable journey has begun,
leading us from Alexandria
to India and Mexico City . . .
We
have learned a lot about the worldwide youth employment challenge,
what needs to be accomplished, and what works.
Yet, we need to
learn more. Now we must seek new approaches and develop creative
strategies to identify the missing pieces in creating productive
and sustainable livelihoods for youth. The YES Secretariat
will implement pilot projects and develop resource centers
worldwide
in the lead up to our first regional meeting in 2003 and
the next Summit in 2004 (see below). Agreements and policies
must
be negotiated
and sufficient resources must be committed by government,
donor agencies, civil societies, philanthropic institutions,
and
the private sector.
We will bring
together world leaders, government, youth and diverse organizations
committed to the
issue of youth employment
to share
and exchange effective practices and opportunities to generate
youth employment on regional and global platforms.
