An estimated 70 percent of the six million cancer deaths globally occur in devel-oping countries. To help control cancer, staff from EDC’s Health and Human Development Programs are working with the American Cancer Society and have developed modules for an international curriculum. The curriculum has already reached 245 cancer control leaders from 62 countries around the globe ranging from Nigeria to Mexico to India.
The training modules are designed for the American Cancer Society University (ACSU), the Society’s signature international program. ACSU strengthens the capacity of emerging cancer societies in developing countries by training leaders in key aspects of running community-based cancer control organizations and programs. The trainings include topics such as program planning, advocacy, volunteer recruitment, and prevention and detection. They also offer sessions to practice skills, begin action planning, and network with other cancer control leaders.
