Early Childhood Teaching and Learning
For more than 20 years, EDC's
Center
for Children and Families (CC&F) has collaborated with
the early childhood education and Head Start communities to enhance
the stature, improve the professional opportunities, and raise
the expectations of preschool teachers. "The essence of our
work is the practice, craft, and art of teaching," says Joanne
Brady, director of CC&F. Staff of the center specialize in
bringing research-based materials and strategies to the early
childhood community.

Parents and Literacy |
CC&F developed and launched a major section of the PBS Parents Web site that helps parents promote the language and literacy development of their children from birth through age 8. CC&F continues to add resources and further articles on language and literacy related topics, such as parent-child book clubs and using computers with young children.

Talking & Reading Together Literacy Updates are designed to provide parents with useful information about a wide variety of language and literacy related topics. Our Literacy Updates bring current research in language and literacy to life in a practical, easy-to-read format. Many articles allow you to zero in on information relevant to your child's current age or developmental level.

Language-rich preschool and home environments contribute significantly to children's literacy and later academic performance, according to EDC researchers.

PreSchool Science
|
Science education experts
believe that both language and social development advance
more quickly when children are intellectually engaged with
the world around them. "Children have a natural spontaneous
curiosity that drives them to investigate," says EDC project
director Karen Worth. "They need to exploreand that
need doesn't begin at age 6 when they enter kindergarten."

developed a series of comprehensive professional development
programs designed for early childhood teachers and their
supervisors. Topics include children's challenging behavior
and the ecology of the classroom, cognitively challenging
curriculum, science learning, inclusion, and emergent literacy.
