Violence Prevention |
The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention strengthens the capacity of 160 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grantees in schools and communities to use evidence-based strategies for mental health promotion and violence prevention. Through training, online learning, site visits, and peer exchange, the center provides culturally competent consultation in grantees’ efforts to serve diverse audiences.

Students Dealing with Asthma |
Responsive Schools: Creating Management and Support Systems for Students with Asthma, describes ways that schools can be involved and responsive in managing the needs of students with asthma during school hours. The document, developed by EDC’s Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative, highlights parent and community involvement and layouts steps that will improve both attendance and achievement of students with asthma.

Bullying Prevention |
Bullying is increasingly drawing the attention of school and health professionals as a serious obstacle to learning and well-being. EDC has produced multiple resources to improve education for students, families, and educators.

International Health |
EDC and the World Health Organization are working in China’s Zhejiang Province to provide professional development that enables schools and ministries of health and education to implement skills-based health education and to establish Health-Promoting Schools. This project has been successful in improving health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in students, parents, and school staff.

EDC is working with educators and administrators in Botswana to develop high-quality, culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS prevention materials that will reach all primary and secondary students in the country. The curriculum uses a combination of existing materials successfully implemented in Botswana and the region, and original research.

The Good and Healthy Schools Project in Germany is a collaboration between EDC’s Health and Human Development Programs, EDC Europe, and the Bertelsmann Foundation. Designed to improve the health and learning in German schools, the project provides teachers and administrators with data, guidelines for school policy and lessons about nutrition, fitness, and methods to manage stress and prevent alcohol, drug abuse, and violence.

School Health Publications |
EDC’s Health and Human Development Programs offers more than 200 publications, curricula, and teaching aids that promote healthy human development and reduce risk behaviors, which can help to improve academic performance. Some can be downloaded for free, and others can be easily purchased online. All of them incorporate up-to-date research and best practices to foster healthy lifestyles and create safe environments that promote learning.

Teenage Health Teaching Modules (THTM) is a successful, nationally used, and independently evaluated comprehensive school health curriculum for grades 6 to 12. It provides adolescents with the knowledge and skills to act in ways that enhance their immediate and long-term health.

School Substance Abuse Prevention |
EDC’s Center for College Health and Safety is one of nine co-signatories on a full-page notice published in the October 12, 2004 editions of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, and US News & World Report. The letter, issued by the Office of National Drug Control Policy is part of a new outreach effort focusing on marijuana’s negative impact on teen learning and academic success.
