School Leadership

Creating successful learning environments is a challenging task that requires educational leaders at all levels—from classroom teachers up to district superintendents—who are knowledgeable of the issues and able to advocate for the solutions that will provide students with the greatest benefit. EDC has created numerous publications, Web sites, and professional development workshops for educators that promote our beliefs that:

  • Educators' active engagement in learning is essential to institutional improvement and professional growth;
  • Educators' knowledge about instruction and student understanding is broadly distributed within and across schools;
  • Educators learn best when what they learn is closely connected to practice;
  • Educators' learning is enhanced by working with knowledgeable peers who question, challenge, and support one another.

Model for School Reform

EDC has collaborated with the Union City, New Jersey school district for more than a decade to help implement and study a large-school reform initiative incorporating a variety of experiments in educational technology. In an article from Edutopia magazine, Margaret Honey, director of EDC’s Center for Children and Technology, discusses Union City's blueprint for change and how the educational principles and change processes behind Union City's reform approaches can be replicated in other districts.

Data-Driven Decision Making

The Grow Network is a large-scale data reporting system that organizes students’ standardized test data into reports customized for teachers, school leaders, and parents. EDC is conducting an evaluation of the system that explores the intersection of decision-support technologies, educators, and the process of transforming data into knowledge. The evaluation will be of special interest to school administrators interested in data-driven decision making.
