July 2008 Promoting Bicycle Safety Communities rally to prevent injuries among young cyclists With nearly 50 percent of cycling-related injuries affecting children and youth ages 5 to 20, more communities are beefing up their bike safety programs. A new EDC brochure, “Promoting Bicycle Safety for Children: Strategies and Tools for Community Programs,” offers a variety of resources to help their programs succeed. It includes factual information about the scope of bicycle injuries and fatalities and offers best practices and strategies that have been expertly reviewed. In addition, recommended resources, including contacts for partnerships and funding, are listed. Also discussed are strategies for encouraging helmet use, such as education programs, legislation, and helmet giveaways.
