1. Senate Briefing on Global HIV/AIDS Pandemic

EDC urges investment in skills-based health education at briefing sponsored by the Basic Education Coalition: http://www.hhd.org/hhdnews/hhdstories/fs_03_2003.asp

2. Radio Learning Centers Fill Education Void in Zambia

Centers reach areas hard-hit by AIDS and famine

While HIV/AIDS and hunger have taken a huge toll on teachers, students, and families in Zambia, EDC is supporting a growing network of community learning centers that bring education to children unable to attend formal schools. The 300-plus centers are run by unpaid mentors using lessons delivered via radio to groups of young people gathered in homes, backyards, churches, or cement-block classrooms. 3. Girls and Science: EDC Publishes a How-To Manual for After-school Clubs

Every Friday is Science Club for Girls at the King Open School. Working in teams, the K-7 girls build bridges, dissect cow hearts, or produce chemical reactions--with assistance from visiting scientists, older students, and part-time educators.

4. Early Childhood Education

EDC study finds state and local leaders say partnerships can improve quality and accessibility of early childhood education programs.

A new study of early childhood education programs across the country explores different ways states and local early education programs have blended funding and resources to improve child care services. The study, Early Care and Education Partnerships: State Actions and Local Lessons, was released by the Partnership Impact Research Project (PI), based at EDC, and is expected to help decision-makers improve programs, especially for low-income parents, who continue to have difficulty finding accessible, high-quality child care, despite increases in public funding for these services.

5. Do Online Courses Work?

Evaluation of EDC course series shows participants retain, apply new knowledge.

Trainers wondering whether online courses are effective and feasible-particularly in a time of budget cutbacks that make travel and conferences prohibitive-can learn from the evaluation results of a distance-learning program in EDC's Division of Health and Human Development (HHD). Participants not only found online learning satisfying, they retained what they learned and were motivated to apply it to their work.
