EDC’s Al Cuoco Appointed to Massachusetts Mathematics and Science Advisory Council
Boston, MA: Senior Scientist Al Cuoco, director of the Center for Mathematics Education at Education Development Center, has been appointed to the 2007-2008 Massachusetts Mathematics and Science Advisory Council, which advises the Commonwealth’s Commissioner and State Board of Education. The 16-member council assesses statewide trends and needs; analyzes information regarding mathematics and science education; and makes recommendations regarding education legislation and regulations.
The Council is one of several Board of Education advisory councils established to advise the Commissioner and the Board in the development of education reform in Massachusetts. Each council meets 4-6 times per year and through diverse membership, offers perspectives and experience of a wide variety of constituents to strengthen public education.
Cuoco’s career spans more than 30 years. At EDC, he has worked in curriculum development, professional development, and education policy and is currently working on a four-year, NSF-funded, comprehensive high school mathematics program. He taught high school mathematics in Woburn, Massachusetts from 1969 until 1993. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Brandeis University.
The Math-Science Advisory Council will hold its first meeting of the 2007-2008 school year November 29th at the WPI Math & Science Academy, Worcester.
