Contact: EDC Announces Community Initiative to Improve Chronic and End-of-Life Care Ned Rimer, co-founder of Citizen Schools, to lead effort Newton, MA: A new effort to help patients and families better navigate the health care system to care for chronically ill family members will be led by Ned Rimer, recently appointed at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC). Rimer, a co-founder of Citizen Schools, joins EDC’s Center for Applied Ethics, bringing his more than 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience. A social entrepreneur, Rimer will lead the new community initiative to improve chronic and end-of-life care in communities across the nation. The initiative will help patients and families better use the health care system and train networks of volunteers who will support people who are struggling with chronic and debilitating illness. “As the baby boomers reach retirement, we see an increasing need for creative and effective strategies to care for the aging,” said EDC Vice President Mildred Solomon, who directs the Center for Applied Ethics. “Ned Rimer believes in the power of individuals—from all walks of life—to make a difference in their communities, and he will help us create what we hope will be a grassroots movement to help patients and their families through a most challenging time in their lives,” Solomon said. Rimer brings to EDC expertise in health, education, and international development. At Citizen Schools, he helped create a national network, connecting adult volunteers to young people in hands-on learning after school. He helped expand the program from a single school in Boston to 37 schools in six states, serving nearly 4,000 students and engaging 2,800 volunteers. Rimer lectures at Lesley University’s Graduate School of Education and Boston University’s Graduate School of Management. He holds an MBA from Boston University and a Masters in Education from Harvard University. He and his family live in Cambridge. Education Development Center, Inc.
