Challenge
Licensed commercial truck drivers are the lifeblood of the national transportation, distribution, and logistics industry. While the U.S. Department of Transportation has established national minimum training standards for obtaining an entry-level commercial driver’s license (CDL), there has been no standardized high school curriculum to prepare students seeking to enter the transportation workforce.
EDC has worked with the Next Generation in Trucking Association (NGT) to address this challenge by adapting and scaling an existing successful high school truck driving curriculum into a pre-packaged modular online curriculum companion that can be used by high school teachers across the United States. The curriculum guide helps educators prepare students to successfully achieve their commercial learner’s permit through a field-tested course of study aligned with current research and best practices from the field.
Key Activities
In collaboration with NGT, EDC carried out the following activities:
- Reviewed existing curriculum materials and supplementary resources and identified specific points for adaptation, enhancement, and standards alignment
- Developed scripts, supplementary resources, and formative and summative assessments in the form of a curriculum guide for use by high school educators in multiple states within the United States
- Identified five industry subject matter experts, and managed their review and advisement on curriculum module content
- Wrote promotional materials for NGT to share
- Developed the product design for online modules for dissemination to schools and districts
