Steve Shuman, a national expert in public health and early childhood development, has supported Head Start and childcare programs in improving their services for almost 50 years. In 2020, he was awarded the Dr. Susan S. Aronson Early Education and Child Care Advocacy Award by the American Academy of Pediatrics in recognition of his dedication to improving the health, safety, and development of young children.
Shuman has worked for equity and inclusion of children with disabilities, dual language learners, people of color, tribal communities, and LGBTQ families throughout his career. Currently, he is the director of outreach and distance learning for the National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety.
As a training and technical assistance specialist and materials developer for the National Center on Early Childhood and Wellness, Shuman contributed to the design and delivery of hundreds of resources and trainings to support Head Start programs. As an Infoline manager, he responded to over 6,000 inquiries on health, safety, and wellness.
Shuman holds a BS in Elementary Education and Creative Dramatics from Emerson College.
